Background

Kierra Falbo completed her Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill and her Master’s degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics at Northwestern University. Kierra is
currently a Research Prosthetist Orthotist with the Rehabilitation & Engineering Center for Optimizing
Veteran Engagement & Reintegration (RECOVER) at the Minneapolis VA and a doctoral candidate at the
University of Minnesota. Her dissertation work focuses on the systematic assessment of phantom limb
pain after amputation to inform personalized treatment recommendations.

Why did you apply?

I applied for the award to support my education in the orthotics and prosthetics field and to highlight my
academic achievement during my Master’s coursework.

How did the funding help you meet your goals?

This award helped me to complete my Master’s degree in prosthetics and orthotics. After completing my
certification in prosthetics and orthotics and working in the field, I have continued to pursue my education
through a PhD in Rehabilitation Science.

How did the funding impact your career?

This award helped me to showcase my academic performance and set myself apart throughout my
career.

What did the funding mean to you personally?

The funding provided through this award helped to ease the burden of expenses that are encountered in
the pursuit of prosthetics and orthotics certification. I was proud to receive the award, and I was
encouraged to continue working to further the prosthetics and orthotics profession.
